Introduction
The struts that hold the rear window open will fail at some point. It’s important to replace failing struts because an unsupported window has the potential to dangerously drop on your head or shatter against any cargo sticking out. Fortunately, replacing these struts is an easy (and quick) repair - you just need new struts, a flathead screwdriver, something to hold the window open, and 15 minutes.
=== Process Summary ===
Here’s what you’ll do for this procedure:
# Safely secure the window.
# Loosen the poplocking tabs on the strut joints with a screwdriver.
# Firmly pull the bottom, then top joint off the mounting studvehicle to remove the old strut.
# Firmly press on the top, then bottom joint of the new strut.
# Repeat for the other strut.
=== Special Requirements ===
You’ll want to consider the following:
* ''Having a partner is immensely helpful.'' Having someone hold the window open is easier (and safer) than propping it open.
* ''Some users may need a step stool.'' Because the top of the strut is quite high, some users may find it more comfortable to use a step stool or step ladder.
=== Hazards ===
This procedure isn’t dangerous, but be aware of the following hazards.
'''Major Hazards:'''
The only significant hazard for this is
* ''The window could fall and hurt you.'' Be sure it’s secure.
'''Minor Hazards:'''
Other minor hazards are
* ''The tabs on the struts could be flung into your eyes.'' The risk of this is low unless you try to completely remove the tabs or use excessive force when loosening the them.
* ''The grease on the strut joints and mounting studs is toxic.'' Wash your hands when you’re done.
