Introduction
In this teardown, we'll be taking apart Starbucks' brew-it-yourself Barista Espresso Maker to take the mystery out of these relatively simple steam machines.
Espresso machines use steam, rather than boiling water, to brew concentrated coffee often mixed with frothy milk. A steam pipe found on nearly every espresso machine allows the operator to froth and steam milk to make drinks ranging from the cappuccino to the macchiato.
