If your Nspire CX (CAS) isn’t functioning properly, there’s likely something wrong with the Operating System (OS). There are multiple ways to re-install the OS.

The software does not recognize a calculator that does not have the OS installed. Therefore I am stuck with an empty calculator that will not take new OS, as the software does not recognize it. What do I do?

Does your calculator boot at all? Do you have the Nspire CX or the Nspire CX II? The steps are different for each. The software should recognize the calculator even with no OS.
Does your computer recognize when the calculator is plugged in (does it make the 'new device detected' sound)?
I have the same trouble that Mattehew. My computer detect the something in the usb terminal, but said that the USB device is not recognized, an the connectivity software didn´t reconized my calculator. My calculator is TI-nspire cx CAS l.
