  1. Minirig Battery Replacement, What we're dealing with: crwdns2935265:01crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:01crwdne2935265:0
    • Here's what we're dealing with- an OG, non Bluetooth Minirig that's over 10 years old.

    • It's working, but the battery life has dropped to unusable. The light switches from green to cyan an hour or so after being fully charged.

    • It's time to replace its battery!

    • While it's tempting to disassemble by unscrewing those silver screws on the face, that's not the way in. They are secured with Nyloc nuts and trying to remove them is likely to cause damage and frustration. It's far better to turn it over and remove the base.

  2. Minirig Battery Replacement, The way in: crwdns2935265:02crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:01crwdne2935265:0
    • There are clear sqidgy feet covering the hex socket screw heads.

    • I used my fingernails to remove them, a spudger would work too.

    • At a push a small flathead screwdriver would work, but be careful not to gouge into the plastic.

  3. Minirig Battery Replacement, Removing the feet to gain access to the screws: crwdns2935265:03crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0 Minirig Battery Replacement, Removing the feet to gain access to the screws: crwdns2935265:03crwdnd2935265:02crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0
    • The clear rubberised feet are now removed, but there is an adhesive layer over the screw heads that must be peeled off to expose the hex head screw sockets.

  4. Minirig Battery Replacement, Removing the screws: crwdns2935265:04crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0 Minirig Battery Replacement, Removing the screws: crwdns2935265:04crwdnd2935265:02crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0
    • Use a 2.5mm hex tool to remove the lovely stainless screws.

    • An Ifixit driver works very nicely :)

  5. Minirig Battery Replacement, Removing the base: crwdns2935265:05crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:01crwdne2935265:0
    • Once the screws have been removed, the base can be separated from the metal body.

    • One of mine came apart easily, but the other wasn't wanting to come apart. I partially inserted one of the screws, put some sideways pressure on it to lock it into the plastic while applying enough force downwards to pull the base off.

    • The base came off pretty easily using this technique and no chance of damaging the metal body or plastic base as long as you're not too heavy handed.

  6. Minirig Battery Replacement, The view inside: crwdns2935265:06crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:01crwdne2935265:0
    • There's the amplifier and charging circuit on a single PCB.

    • The speaker driver is surrounded by wadding to improve the bass response.

    • The battery is attached to the base with double-sided tape.

    • We can leave the internals alone, all we need to do is remove the battery, ready for its replacement.

  7. Minirig Battery Replacement, Disconnecting the original battery: crwdns2935265:07crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:01crwdne2935265:0
    • The battery is wired to a multi connector which also has wires to the speaker and charging socket. It's not possible to separate the battery wires from this connector without a special tool and an unnecessary amount of bother.

    • So we'll snip the battery wires to remove the battery and join our new battery onto those later.

    • Be sure to cut the wires one at a time so you don't cause a short-circuit.

    • It's best to cut them close to the battery so you have a decent amount of wire still attached to the main Minirig body.

  8. Minirig Battery Replacement, Remove the battery from the base: crwdns2935265:08crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0 Minirig Battery Replacement, Remove the battery from the base: crwdns2935265:08crwdnd2935265:02crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0
    • Use fingers to prise the battery from the double-sided mounting tape

    • The tape should remain on the base. Leave it there as we'll be using that to mount our new battery later.

  9. Minirig Battery Replacement, Prepare the battery wires: crwdns2935265:09crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0 Minirig Battery Replacement, Prepare the battery wires: crwdns2935265:09crwdnd2935265:02crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0
    • Strip about 4mm of insulation from the end of each wire that's coming from the main Minirig circuit board.

    • Tin the ends of the wire by applying a small amount of solder to the exposed metal.

    • The Minirig itself is now ready to have its new battery attached.

  10. Minirig Battery Replacement, 3 cells for the new battery: crwdns2935265:010crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:01crwdne2935265:0
    • Here you can see the red original battery pack which is made from 3 Li-Po pouch cells wired in series.

    • In the foreground we have the new cells, ready to be turned into a replacement battery pack.

  11. Minirig Battery Replacement, Prepare the new cells: crwdns2935265:011crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:03crwdne2935265:0 Minirig Battery Replacement, Prepare the new cells: crwdns2935265:011crwdnd2935265:02crwdnd2935265:03crwdne2935265:0 Minirig Battery Replacement, Prepare the new cells: crwdns2935265:011crwdnd2935265:03crwdnd2935265:03crwdne2935265:0
    • Prepare the cells by cutting off the supplied connector from each (if supplied with one).

    • For safety, to avoid short circuiting the cells, be sure to cut each wire individually.

    • Stagger the cuts so the remaining wires are different lengths and less likely to touch each other during the assembly of the pack.

  12. Minirig Battery Replacement, Prepare the heatshrink: crwdns2935265:012crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0 Minirig Battery Replacement, Prepare the heatshrink: crwdns2935265:012crwdnd2935265:02crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0
    • We'll need 4 lengths of heatshrink, each about 15mm long and with an internal diameter of around 3.5mm

  13. Minirig Battery Replacement, Connect the 3 cells in series: crwdns2935265:013crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:01crwdne2935265:0
    • Each battery is wired to the next like this.

    • First, tin the ends of the wires by applying a small amount of solder.

    • Don't forget to slide the heatshrink on before joining the wires together.

    • Then hold the wires that you are joining next to each other while applying heat to melt the solder and permanently join the wires.

    • Positive goes to negative, leaving a red wire at one end of the chain and black at the other. This is wiring the cells in series, which increases the voltage. So here we have 3 3.7 Volt cells wired in series, giving us a nominal 11.1 V battery pack.

  14. Minirig Battery Replacement, Assemble the 3 cells into a pack: crwdns2935265:014crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0 Minirig Battery Replacement, Assemble the 3 cells into a pack: crwdns2935265:014crwdnd2935265:02crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0
    • Use a heat gun to shrink the heatshrink tubing down onto the wires to create safe, insulated joins.

    • If you don't have a heat gun available, a hair dryer may work, or failing that a lighter.

    • If using a lighter, hold the heatshrink out of the flame or you may melt it or the surrounding insulation

    • Use double-sided tape between the cells to hold them together.

  15. Minirig Battery Replacement, More pack assembly: crwdns2935265:015crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0 Minirig Battery Replacement, More pack assembly: crwdns2935265:015crwdnd2935265:02crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0
    • Use some PVC insulation tape around each side of the pack to ensure it all stays together

    • Due to the thickness of these cells only just fitting into the available space, it is best not to increase the thickness by having any tape around the centre of the cells.

    • Tidy up the linking wires by tucking them under the PVC tape at that end.

  16. Minirig Battery Replacement, Connect the new battery to the Minirig: crwdns2935265:016crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0 Minirig Battery Replacement, Connect the new battery to the Minirig: crwdns2935265:016crwdnd2935265:02crwdnd2935265:02crwdne2935265:0
    • Be sure to put the other 2 lengths of heatshrink on before joining the wires from the battery pack to the Minirig to insulate the connections.

    • The wires from the battery pack can now be connected to the wires going to the Minirig circuit board.

    • Red to red, black to black.

  17. Minirig Battery Replacement, Reassembly: crwdns2935265:017crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:01crwdne2935265:0
    • Put the base onto the main Minirig body, being careful that there aren't any battery wires caught between the speaker's magnet and the battery.

    • Line up the screw holes in the base with the screws in the front face.

    • Insert the screws and tighten.

    • Once tight, check around the join between the base and the metal body to ensure that it's correctly mounted with no gaps.

  18. Minirig Battery Replacement, Happy feet: crwdns2935265:018crwdnd2935265:01crwdnd2935265:01crwdne2935265:0
    • Lastly, it's recommended that the feet are replaced.

    • Without feet you are likely to hear vibration when the speaker is firing upwards, it is also possible that the bass response will not be as good.

    • The Minirig could also vibrate on a smooth surface and fall from a table or shelf.

    • The originals are self-adhesive, 8mm diameter and made of clear silicone.
