Follow this guide to replace the battery on a JBL Tune 220TWS/225TWS earbud.

  1.     • Use a heat gun to heat up the battery cover

    • This will soften the plastic, making it easier to remove the cover with minimal damage.

    • Heat for 5 seconds at a time, constantly moving the heat, making sure not to melt the plastic.

    • Insert the tip of an opening tool, pick tool or razor blade into the battery cover seam and work your way around the seam until the cover releases from the base of the earbud. (Photo 1)

    • Be careful not to damage the 4 plastic prongs on the base of the earbud (Photo 2) or the 5th retaining clip located at the top of the earbud cover (Photo 3) that are used to hold the battery cover in place.

    • If the retaining clips or any of the prongs are damaged during the removal process, you can use epoxy to secure the cover when finished replacing the battery.

    • Place the earbuds into a helping hands tools to make it easier to work with while soldering. (Photo 1)

    • Heat up the soldering iron.

    • Recommend using a conical solder tip for the small pads and to prevent any unwanted damage to the surrounding plastic.

    • Hold the tip of the iron onto the pad where one of the battery wires is attached until the solder melts and the wire is released from the pad.

    • Use tweezers to pry underneath the battery terminal wire so that it does not rettach to the pad as the solder cools back down. (Photo 2)

    • Do the same for the second battery terminal wire.

    • Gently tug on the body of the battery itself so that it does not rettach to the pad as the solder cools back down. (Photo 3)

    • The battery will come with more wire than what is needed so you will need to cut the wire down to about 4 mm long

    • Tin the Wire (Link to Helpful Guide for Stripping and Tinning Wires)

    • Use a pair of side cutters to strip away about 1 mm of insulation.

    • Be careful not to cut the wire too short or else you will have to remove the yellow kapton tape from the battery and solder a new wire onto the battery itself.

    • Apply a small amount of flux to the now exposed wire.

    • Adding flux to the wire will aid in the tinning process

    • To a clean iron tip, apply a small amount of solder.

    • Place the tip of the tinned iron onto the fluxed wire until the solder wicks into the wire.

    • Tin the pads

    • Apply a small amount of flux to the battery terminal pads. (Photo 1)

    • To a clean iron tip, apply a small amount of solder. (Photo 2)

    • Place the tip of the tinned iron onto the fluxed pads until a small blob of solder is left on each pad. (Photo 3)

    • Use isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip to clean any additional flux left on the board.

    • If you're replacing the battery on the left earbud then the pad corresponding to black wire will be labeled BAT - on the PCB. (Photo 2)

    • If you're replacing the battery on the right earbud then the pad corresponding to red wire will be labeled BAT + on the PCB. (Photo 3)

    • Heat up the solder on the pad and insert the wire into the melted solder.

    • Holding the body of the battery in between two fingers, you can more easily manuever the wire into the melted solder

    • Repeat the above steps for the second battery terminal wire

    • Using tweezers may be useful in manuevering the second wire into place

    • Make sure that there is no solder that is bridging the two pads together that would short circuit the battery.

    • Test fit the battery cover (Photo 1)

    • Carefully slide the cover back onto the retaining prongs on the base of the earbud.

    • If any of the prongs were bent in the removal process then gently try to bend them back into position.

    • If the any of the retaining clips or prongs were broken during the removal of the cover, then you can use super glue to hold those points together.

    • Test Earbud

    • Hold the power button for 2 seconds to confirm that the earbud powers on and the repair was successful.

    • If the any of the retaining clips or prongs were broken during the removal of the cover, then apply epoxy to those points of the earbud.

    • Evenly clamp the earbud using zip ties or whatever methods works best for you, until the epoxy fully cures.

    • Try to avoid pressing the power button when clamping the earbud together

    • Make sure that there's an evenly spaced seam around the earbud to ensure the best tactile feel of the button press on the earbud.
