This guide will show you how to replace the speakers on the IBM ThinkPad T42.
If your T42 audio output is distorted or not functioning due to a damaged speaker, you can restore the sound quality by replacing the speaker using this easy-to-follow guide.
Power down the T42 and disconnect from any power supply before you begin.

Use a Phillips #0 screwdriver to remove the twenty screws on the underside of the T42.

Remove the four Phillips screws located on either side of the rear of the T42 (there are two on each end.)

Flip the laptop over and open the screen to access the keyboard and trackpad.

Carefully maneuver the palm rest away from the keyboard, as both the keyboard and palm rest/trackpad will come off together.

Grasp the metal bracket to remove it from the device.

Remove the rubber cover from the microphone.

Check to ensure the speaker cartridge moves freely before removing the cartridge.

Disconnect the speaker wire from the unit and carefully remove the speaker.
