Winter is around the corner, which means that it’s getting cold outside, putting your sprinkler system lines to risk of freezing. When water freezes, it expands. This hydro-expansion can cause fittings, sprinklers, valves, pumps, pipes and other parts of irrigation systems to burst and break. Draining your system of all water is the only way to ensure that it will still be in working order when spring arrives. Luckily, there’s a way that you can take care of that and blow the water out of the system so it doesn’t freeze. This is an easy and fast guide showing you exactly what to do to get your sprinkler system ready for the winter.

Shut the water supply off to the irrigation system. (usually found in the utility room or basement)

Obtain an air compressor. (you can rent one from the local Home Depot)

Connect a hose to the compressor, and one to the water line (in basement).

Start manually turning on each station of the system one by one.

Let the air blow the water out for about 2 minutes per station.

Unplug the hose from the compressor and the water line.

Turn the air compressor off and then turn the sprinkler system off from the control panel outside.
