Measure the damaged post to purchase the replacement.
-
Take photo of post and take note of where the boards are connected.
-
Clear out work area of any clutter or hazards.
-
-
-
Use a shovel to dig a deep hole around the post until you expose the concrete below the soil.
-
If necessary you can attempt to break off the top of the post to allow for more room. The pickaxe can be a good tool for this.
-
Make sure to keep the excess dirt in a small pile, as this is what you need to fill the hole.
-
-
-
Excavate the dirt surrounding the concrete to allow more room for the pickaxe.
-
Use a pickaxe to break up the concrete into smaller chunks and remove them from the hole.
-
-
-
Carefully lift the post out of the hole.
-
Leave the hole as it is, so you don't have to do additional digging.
-
-
-
-
Insert the new post into the hole left by the damaged one.
-
If the post is loose, place the larger concrete chunks to support the post while you prepare for the next step.
-
-
-
Fill in the hole about halfway around the post, leaving 6-10 inches below the surface to allow room for the concrete.
-
-
-
Use the drill and screws to secure the fence support beams to the new fence posts.
-
Use 2-3 screws per support to ensure that the fence remains sturdy.
-
-
-
Pour 3-4 inches of cement into the hole surrounding the new post.
-
Following the directions on the cement, pour room temperature water over the powder until it is fully saturated and some water remains on top.
-
Wait 2-3 hours for cement to set.
-
-
-
Cover the cement with the remaining dirt once it has finished setting and pat it down.
-
-
-
Line up boards with existing boards so they are flush with the ground.
-
Use the drill and screws to secure the boards to the the post.
-
Use 2 screws at both the top and bottom of the boards to distribute weight.
-
Clean up the work area and check for lost screws.
-
By the end of this guide the post should be installed and secure.
