There are many small particles in the air that can damage your engine if they enter it. A engine filter can stop these materials from entering and extend the life of an engine dramatically. Over time however, these particles can build up and make it difficult for the air to get through, so regular replacement is necessary.
Luckily, this is a car repair that is easy enough to do on your own, you should only need a 9mm socket, a new filter, and a little WD-40. All in all, it should be done in less than 10 minutes.
