Background
The Philips Respironics DreamStation is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device designed to help people with sleep apnea breathe more easily while they sleep. After its release in 2015, it rapidly rose to popularity as one of the most widely used CPAP machines in clinics and at home globally. Dreamstation includes more variants such as BiPAP, AutoCPAP and CPAP models.
The device has a small, rectangular body, a colored display, a humidifier port that faces forward, and wireless Bluetooth connectivity so that usage data can be tracked using the Philips DreamMapper app. Its modular design makes cleaning, maintenance, and component replacement easier, which appeals to both individual users who perform sleep therapy at home and biomedical equipment technicians working in hospitals.
The DreamStation was sold all over the world and, depending on the configuration, ranged in price from $600 to $1,500 USD. It replaced the older Respironics System One Series, in which featured new pressure-control software and a quieter operation. Philips removed a large number of its products in 2021 because there was possibility of hazardous particles leaking from the internal sound-reduction foam. Due to this event, which got world-wide attention, which led to introduction of DreamStation 2 with improved airflow and safer materials.
