Panasonic Toughbook CF-54 Repair

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-54 laptop is a semi-rugged, portable computer. The laptop is rated for MIL-STD-810G and IP51 which means it is protected against drops of up to three feet, sand and dust, altitude, humidity, vibration, and temperature shocks. It is spill-resistant and has a magnesium alloy frame. The hard drive is heated for cold environments and is specially mounted to protect against shock. The CF-54 has optional addons including 4G LTE connectivity, dedicated satellite GPS, a contactless SmartCard reader, and antenna passthrough. The CF-54 is commonly used by first responders and military personnel.

There is one product recall for the Panasonic Toughbook CF-54's battery. The recall is for batteries manufactured between October 2011 and March 2012. The issue is a potential fire hazard related to foreign material that was mixed into the battery cells. The affected battery model numbers are CF-VZSU61U and CF-VZSU61R that have lot numbers BAW, BBX, BC, C1, and C2. The battery nameplate contains the model and lot numbers. Defective batteries should be software disabled and unable to work. Panasonic offers free replacements for the affected batteries.

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-55 is an upgraded model of the CF-54. Fully rugged models are also available as Toughbooks with model numbers of CF-33, FZ-G2, and the FZ-40.

Recall Announcement

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-54 either have a black outer covering with the word "Panasonic" in silver on the laptop lid, or they may have a silver case with the words "Panasonic" and "Toughbook" on the laptop lid. There is a rugged carrying handle that gives all Toughbooks a distinct look. When opened the model number is visible on the left below the display. The underside of the laptop has plates that show the model number, serial number, and ESN number.

The CF-54 is 10.7" long, 13.6" wide, and 1.2" in height. The weight varies between 4.2 and 4.6 lbs. based upon which optional modules are installed.
