Background
The Makita 6010D is a cordless, electric drill designed for lighter job involving wood and/or steel. Makita released this portable drill in 1978, paired with a 7.2 volt nickel-cadmium removable battery pack that slides into the pistol-like grip which powers a 10mm (3/8") chuck. At the time, the release of this portable drill helped innovate the current workshop space and push for cordless technology.
The Makita 6010D was released in 1978 and it was the first rechargeble drill using a nickle-cadmium battery. While the drill is almost 50 years old, the Makita 6010D is still used by DIY repairers, woodworkers, and tradespeople. As of 2025, there have been no recalls on this model, Many keep using this drill simply because of how easy it is to use and replace parts. You can find many replacement batteries/third party parts online on repair sites.
While the drill is old and reliable, it does have common issues, such as dead batteries, the drill not turning on, and loss of reverse function. However, there are guides to fix these problems, as repairing this drill expand the tool's lifespan, save you money, and reduce overall electronic waste.
There are some issues reported regarding the Makita 6010D. Some have reported the drill's chuck may wear out, causing bits to slip and having to repair. Another issue is the aging motor/battery. Since the drill is older, sometimes the battery pack won't hold the charge, reducing runtime and causing failure. Finally, few have stated the on/off trigger won't work sometimes, requiring a part replacement.
Identification
The Makita 6010D's model number is on a silver Makita nameplate located on the left side of the drill's plastic housing, just above the trigger and beneat the ventilation slots. This drill can also be identified by it's classic teal color and black accents, along with it's compact pistol-grip design which houses the battery. Unlike modern drills, the Makita 6010D controlled by its trigger-based variable speed (see diagram).
