== Background and Identifications ==

The Nellcor N-6000 is a pulse oximeter and capnograph made by Mallinckrodt’s Nellcor division. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. The Nellcor division focuses mainly on producing pulse oximeters and oxygen monitors.

The N-6000 model is a microprocessor-controlled device designed to continuously measure pulse rate, oxygen saturation, pulse rate, end-tidal carbon dioxide, and respiratory rate. Oxygen saturation is measured using reusable or adhesive sensors that are sold for a variety of patient sizes. The plethysmograph is displayed as a waveform and the oxygen saturation values are displayed numerically. The patient’s relative pulse strength is measured by the pulse oximetry circuits and displayed on a bar graph indicator. End-tidal carbon dioxide is measured by positioning an infrared mainstream carbon dioxide sensor across an intubated patient’s airway. The carbon dioxide is displayed as a waveform, while the amount of carbon dioxide present at the end of exhalation is presented numerically.

The N-6000 monitor provides both visible and audible alarms. Alarms are produced when a variable moves outside the operator-defined limits, when a sensor is disconnected, or when the monitor detects a loss of pulse or apnea. An audible tone signals each pulse. The pitch of the tone changes when the oxygen saturation changes with higher tones as the saturation increases and lower tones as it decreased.

The name “Nellcor Ultra Cap” is printed in the upper left-hand corner of the monitor’s front face.
