== Background and Identification ==

The Nellcor N-180 is a pulse oximeter made by Medtronic's Nellcor division. Pulse oximeters are non-invasive devices used to monitor a patient’s oxygen saturation. The Nellcor division focuses mainly on producing pulse oximeters and oxygen monitors.

The Nellcor N-180 model measures the functional oxygen saturation of arterial hemoglobin and pulse rate. Measurements are updated at each pulse beat.  The N-180 model provides digital outputs that can be sent to external data recording devices. It features three oximetry operating modes that change measurement averaging time. The monitor is powered by an internal AC power supply that operates the monitor and charges its internal battery. The battery pack is advertised to last up to eight hours on a full charge and takes 14 hours to charge fully.

When oxygen saturation and pulse rate move above or below set limits, the N-180 monitor produces audible alarms. Audible alarms can be temporarily silenced or disabled, and the alarm tone features an adjustable volume.

The Nellcor N-180 pulse oximeter includes the name “NELLCOR” printed in white capital letters in the upper left-hand corner of the monitor’s front face. The name “N-180 PULSE OXIMETER” is printed in blue capital letters underneath the Nellcor name. Two digital displays are located near the center of the monitor’s front face.
