D51844
Background
The DeWalt D51844 Type-5 is a pneumatic full round head framing nailer manufactured by DeWalt and released in 2010. It was designed for heavy duty framing, decking, sheathing, and subfloor construction. Powered by compressed air, the D51844 delivers consistent driving power for nails ranging from 2 inches to 3½ inches in length at an operating pressure of 70–120 psi.
This tool represents the later generation of DeWalt’s D51800-series nailers, known for their magnesium bodies, adjustable depth settings, and dual-mode firing (sequential and contact).
In 2005, DeWalt announced a safety recall for some of the early D51844 models and related framing nailers due to a defect in the contact trip mechanism that could allow unintentional firing. The recall affected units produced between 2002 and 2005 and was resolved through a free repair program. The “Type-5” label refers to the fifth production revision, which introduced updated internal seals and trigger components for improved reliability and air efficiency. Although now discontinued, the D51844 remains widely used in construction due to its robust design and readily serviceable parts.
Identification
The D51844 Type-5 can be identified by the yellow and black DeWalt housing with a rear exhaust port and angled magazine. The model number and “Type 5” designation are printed on the left side label plate located near the air inlet.
Distinctive visual features include a 20-degree nail magazine compatible with full round head nails, a silver magnesium body, and a black rubberized grip. The tool uses a ¼-inch NPT air fitting and features a tool-free depth adjustment wheel located near the nosepiece.
Type-5 models were produced around 2010 and share many internal parts with the D51822 (clipped-head) variant, though the D51844 is designed exclusively for full-round-head nails.
