Background and Identification
A cryostat is a device used to keep laboratory samples at a low temperature. The different types of cryostats are as follows:
- Closed-cycle
- Continuous-flow
- Bath
- Multistage
Medical laboratories use cryostats to preserve frozen tissue samples. There is an instrument that slices the frozen tissue called a microtome that is a part of the cryostat as well. Once the slices are taken they can be analyzed under a microscope after they have been warmed, dried and stained.
