Background
Abbott's Optium Xceed is an automatic blood glucose monitoring device. This measures both Blood glucose and β-Ketones. The main purpose of the device is to help individuals manage diabetes better. This is very useful in identifying the insulin-dependent persons who are potentially at risk of ketoacidosis.
It is an easy to use two-step testing machine. The device is suitable for both self-use and professional use.
Blood glucose monitoring is the measurement of glucose or sugar in the blood, glucose is also the main source of energy for body cells. Monitoring glucose helps prevent both low and high sugar. It is also useful in determining the insulin dosage and detection of any glucose fluctuations. In the long-term monitoring glucose level will help reduce long-term damages to kidney, nerves, heart and eyes.
This also measures β-hydroxybutyrate, a type of ketone which is produced by body when fat is burned for energy instead of glucose. Monitoring this helps with energy management, dietary planning, and timely medical intervention.
The Medaval device list has performed various accuracy and reliability clinical studies for this. The device has received a one star Medaval rating and was proven to be accurate.
Identification
The Abbott Optium Xceed is a specially designed glucometer. It is a lightweight and compact machine, which is designed ergonomically. It has a simple icon drive menu, with simple use buttons and does not require any manual coding before or during use. It has a large display screen. There is a three-button row right below the screen.
The colour scheme for this device that can be confirmed from the pictures is a silver or grey front with a black bezel. The model's box should clearly say "Optium Xceed" on the front. If the box label is "FreeStyle Optium" or "Optium", it is a new or a different model. The side of the box also confirms the type of strips that are used with the machine.
It comes in an easy to carry case, the device also has lancets available for purchase. There are two types of testing strips, the blue ones are for glucose monitoring, and the purple ones are for monitoring the beta ketones. The dual- monitoring is less common in glucose only monitors.
