Background
Abbott's FreeStyle Lite is a blood glucose monitor. Blood glucose monitors measure the level of simple sugar in the blood. This primarily helps patients diagnosed with type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes as well as pre-diabetes. Their primary function is to alert the user of an acute onset of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. While blood glucose monitors may not treat symptoms, they supply necessary information to the user that allows them to detect and acknowledge an oncoming diabetic emergency then avoid it by taking proper measures
The FreeStyle Lite falls into the category of 'blood glucose meters' which are handheld, portable devices that require a drop of blood to be placed onto a test strip then inserted into the electronic measuring device. They are used in both hospital and home environments and are intended to be simple enough for anyone to use them.
In 1965, The Ames Company created the first blood glucose test strip, followed by the first glucose meter in the 1970s, which evolved into more accurate and user-friendly devices by the 1980s. Supported by advances in test strips, lancets, and electrochemical sensors, self monitoring of blood glucose soon became the standard. The late 1990s introduced continuous glucose monitoring, beginning with professional systems that required calibration and later evolving into real-time devices like the Glucowatch, Guardian, Dexcom, and FreeStyle Navigator. Over the 2000s and 2010s, CGM technology improved in accuracy, comfort, and connectivity, integrating with insulin pumps and smartphones. Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre, released in 2016, revolutionized CGM by eliminating fingerstick calibration and offering long sensor wear times. Today, CGM has transformed diabetes management, providing continuous, real-time data that improves glucose control and reduces complications.
Identification
Though the FreeStyle Lite comes packaged with additional items such as lancets and test strips, the device itself is a blue handheld oval and has a small screen with a grey border. It has three small rubber buttons marked with an 'm', a 'c', and a glyph depicting a lightbulb respectively.
The data port is on the side of the device inline with the bottom of the screen.
The backside of the device holds the battery door
