Background and Identification
First introduced in 1997, the Expedition sits between the smaller Explorer and the larger Excursion in Ford's SUV line.
Standard equipment on the first-generation Expedition included a 4.6 L V8 engine and 4-speed automatic transmission; a 5.4 L V8 engine was offered as an option. Both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions were made. Trim packages included the entry-level XLT and the top-end "Eddie Bauer" model.
Many repair procedures for the Expedition are similar to both the F-150 pickup on which it is based, and the Lincoln Navigator, which is a more luxury-oriented model with the same mechanical underpinnings.
