Land Rover Defender (L316) Technical Specs
Engine Evolution
- 200Tdi & 300Tdi (1990–1998): The "bulletproof" mechanical era. These 2.5L four-cylinder turbodiesels (111 hp) are highly prized for having no electronic ECUs, making them immune to EMPs and easy to fix with basic tools.
- Td5 (1998–2006): Land Rover's own 2.5L five-cylinder turbodiesel (122 hp). It introduced the first major electronic engine management system to the line, offering more refinement and significant tuning potential.
- "Puma" (2007–2016): Sourced from the Ford Transit, these 2.4L and 2.2L engines brought a 6-speed transmission and better emissions compliance, along with a revised "modern" dashboard that finally included a proper heater.
Drivetrain and Chassis
- Drive Type: Permanent 4WD with a two-speed transfer box and a lockable center differential.
- Axles: Solid live axles front and rear, providing maximum durability and constant ground clearance over obstacles.
- Suspension: Long-travel coil springs with hydraulic dampers (a massive upgrade in articulation over the leaf-sprung Series vehicles).
- Brakes: 4-wheel disc brakes became standard during this era, significantly improving stopping power for heavy loads.
Dimensions and Body Styles
- Defender 90: Short wheelbase (92.9 inches)
- Defender 110: Long wheelbase (110 inches)
- Defender 130: Extra-long wheelbase (127 inches)
- Payload: Capable of hauling over 1,000 kg (2,204 lbs) depending on the configuration.
