Repair and disassembly information for the 2020 refresh of the MacBook Air model A2179 with an Intel processor that was released in March 2020.

MacBook air stuck in internet recovery but can't connect to internet

Hi,

(MacBook Air 13" Retina Early 2020 (Intel))

The keyboard and trackpad on my macbook stopped working an in an attempt to resinstall macos hoping it could help fix this, but i erased the startup disk instead....

Now the macbook reboots into internet recovery every time but i can't connect to internet from here, nothing comes up, see the picture.

And i can't seem to turn off the macbook either, it just starts up again into internet recovery again after i turn it off.

What i have tried to get somewhere:

  • All key combinations i could find online, ⌘-R, ⌘-shift-R, ⌘-alt-shift -R. I'm using an external keyboard for this since the built in is still dead. Can't seem to get into any other option.
  • Resetting the PRAM, still not sure if this works since nothing new seems to be happening.
  • connect through ethernet cable to the router, but looks the same with no wifi showing up.

So did i accidentally brick this Macbook or does anyone have any idea on how to proceed?

Well if you have access to a second Mac you should be able to setup a bootable external drive. I suggest getting a 32GB thumb drive either a USB-C or USB-A if you are using an older Mac to setup the drive and you'll need a USB-A to USB-C adapter to get it to connect to this Mac.

Download the needed macOS from Apple's server either via the Apps Store or from their servers following this guide How to download and install macOS you will want to reformat the drive for Mac GUID/APFS and then follow this guide to set it up Create a bootable installer for macOS

Then it's clear sailing! Plug in the drive the system should boot up under it and then jump into Disk Utility to delete the partitions of your systems drive and the format the drive like we just did for the external drive. Once done run the installer! That should do it.

Once done you should be able to connect to your WiFi network.

Thanks, I'll try it out when I can get my second MacBook to work.

@eliasforsgren - Do I dare ask what happening with that system?

I've just lost the charger, it's an 2015 MacBook air.

When you say you reset PRAM, are you sure it actually reset? That's typically what will fix this for me especially if WiFi networks should be available. You can also try resetting SMC, but typically PRAM reset is the trick. I always know that works if the screen blacks out amid boot. SMC is usually harder to tell on this generation of mac if you were successful so you may have to try a few times.

The other thing I would try is to connect this to a physical Ethernet connection if you're able. Internet recovery will also recognize that, but you'll need a USB-C to Ethernet adapter to make that happen. Those are pretty inexpensive if you don't have one already and definitely less than a new MacBook charger for your old one.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I tried now a few times to reset the PRAM but i don't get the "screen black out" as you mention so not sure if it's working. I am using an external (Non apple) keyboard though USB A to USB C adapter.

I'm rebooting it and pressing "alt, win, P and R" which to my knowledge should be corresponding to the right command for resetting the PRAM. Also tried "Win, alt, right shift" to reset the SMC.

I have an ethernet adapter (also non apple) that I've tried using but still the same blank list in internet recovery mode shows up, could it be some drivers that's not working?
