Repair, disassembly, and troubleshooting information for the Xbox Series X, Microsoft's 4K gaming console. The Xbox Series X was released alongside its companion console, the Xbox Series S, on November 10th, 2020.

Xbox Freezing & Audio Stuttering-Tried Everything Except Thermal putty

awhile back, I got a free pre-owned Xbox Series X model (1882) physical disc version. Lately, it’s been freezing and the audio keeps stuttering during gameplay. It happens with any game — for example, I tried playing Gears of War 4, and it froze after about 5–8 minutes.

At first, I thought the issue was with the fan. I cleaned the Xbox with compressed air and even replaced the fan with a genuine one. Later, I opened it up again and applied new thermal paste. I’ve worked with thermal paste before and have done it successfully on my gaming laptop, so I don’t think that’s the problem.

However, the issue is still happening. Now I’m considering replacing the old thermal putty since that’s one thing I haven’t touched yet. Has anyone dealt with a similar issue or used thermal putty to fix it? I can’t seem to figure out what’s causing this.

Hi!

Which Xbox is it? Xbox One Original? Xbox one S?

Gears of War 4 was released for the Xbox One, so it's probably one of them.

Anyway, I think it's the HDD which is causing issues and would replace that one first and then reinstall the software.

Can you let us know which Xbox you are having?

Thanks!

No problem at all!

Alright.. I would check with another SSD and see how that goes. Maybe the SSD is getting bad. The problem is that the SSD is locked with a key. Please do not format the SSD as it contains the key. I think cloning will work...

You can find some more info here: https://www.reddit.com/r/XboxSeriesX/com...

Please let me know if you need any guides!

Funny enough, I recently watch a video of cloning the SSD from IFixit and consider that might be the issue with the console. I will look at the thread you posted. By chance do you have a recommendation for cloner?
