The Game Boy released on April 21, 1989 in Japan, followed by North America on July 31, 1989, and lastly in Europe on September 28, 1990. It is characterized by a large grey casing and model number DMG-01.

Red light turns on but device won't boot

I have some experience repairing gb's but never encountered this before..

The gameboy turns on (the red light turns on) but won't boot, no sound, no screen

BUT when I remove a battery (while I leave the console ON) and put the battery back in place now it 100% of the time boots up the game.

Any suggestions?

Contacts are cleaned, speaker replaced, vertical lines fixed, contrast/volume wheel/OnOff button are all working

Hi!

Probably related to the board without the screen (so with the battery springs on it).

Maybe some trace is damaged there by the acid from batteries.

How does the board look? Still fine? Did you found corrosion before you cleaned it?

I would replace that board and see how it goes. The issue should be solved by then.

If you want to repair the board, please check and test all the traces.

Please let us know how it goes!

Hey, It works perfectly with the back board of a know working gameboy. But I sadly don't have spares to replace this.

I will have to do more investigating then :)

Yeah, the fault is somewhere on the back board unfortunately... You can run a continuity test with a multimeter. Test both ends for the traces, if you get a beep, the trace is fine. If not, you need to repair it or run new cables to both ends. It take a lot of time, but it's the only way I guess...

i have this exact issue and it has puzzled me for months ive reflowed every solder point i could find and also bridged the power switch and dc jack so they would allow it to work if they were corroded. Ive also recapped everything on the main board the lcd works fine ive tested it on working motherboards without issue and whats weird is that the console boots up whenever i short ground and vcc before that its not giving the proper voltage but after i short it everything works perfectly.
