Smaller, thinner, quieter model of the Playstation 2 (SCPH-700xx) released by Sony in September, 2004.

Replaced the disk laser on PS2 SLIM; drive motor now slips

Hi,

I just replaced the laser on my ps2 slim. I was testing it, put in a cd game and pressed down the two sensors for the door. The game starts to spin, then suddenly stops when the drive shaft send the laser down. It gets stuck there now until it stops. When I move the laser manually,it seems fine. I tightened the screw, but not tight enough to strip or break anything. I’m at a loss, not sure how to fix the problem now.

Hi!

It could be the rotor or the worm motor. When you move the laser manually, it does sound like the worm motor.

Can you share some pictures regarding the worm motor?

Thanks!

Hi ! Thanks for responding!

I did do some more tinkering with this yesterday after I took a break. Turns out, I had not correctly installed the laser on the left side. There’s a notch in the laser that’s supposed to hook onto that metal slide, but I didn’t notice it at first and just set it on top. Fixing that issue did fix the motor problem and it’s working fine now. I will still post pictures for clarity after work in case someone else has this issue!

However, it still is not reading disks and I’m worried that the door sensor or the power cable is the issue. Either the door sensor is not good and the system thinks the door isn’t shutting properly, or the system itself is not getting enough power from this Amazon power cord.

Thanks so much for your reply :)

My pleasure! Yes, there is a notch in the laser and it need to be correctly seated in the rail before use! Did you removed the anti-static soldering blob? Could be that the replacement laser is faulty. If it's trying to read all the time, it's the laser. If it's not trying to read and the same thing happen with the lid open as closed, it's most of the time the sensor on the motherboard....
