PS2 Slim won't access browser or system config

Just recently got a PS2 Slim off market place to go down nostalgia lane with the og NFS Most Wanted. Guy had it since he was a kid & still had the original controller, & cables as well as 2 memory cards. He even showed me it working. When I boot it up without a disc it goes to the browser/system configuration screen but the dots on boot up group together & don't spray out & spin in a circle as I remember them doing & then I can't access either selection. I've booted it with & without the memory cards installed & it does the same thing. You can still hear the audio actively going for the boot screen so it's not freezing up on the screen. I've put a movie disc in & it goes right to it no problem. Subsequently the controller is sending auto inputs when I did that with the movie so is it possibly the controller won't let me access them & a minor disc drive issue at the same time? Or just an issue with the controller?

So turns out it was 2 different simple problems. The controller was busted on the left stick & wouldn't let me select anything & the other was the CMOS battery was dead after sitting in a closet for YEARS. After getting a 3rd party controller & letting stay plugged in for a few days I was able to access the browser & system configuration. After accessing system configuration to adjust the time the dots were all moving around as normal.

Hi! That is some good info!! I know that the PS2 phats can show grey screens when the CMOS battery is dead. Now this is some nice info regarding the PS2 Slims. Almost all the PS2 Slims their CMOS batteries are dead. Did you had the one that is straight on the motherboard (the cell) or the one with the cable that is taped in? Thanks!

The CMOS battery was one that has soldered on cords with a connector to the motherboard. I just left it plugged in for a couple days & it gave it enough charge to work normally. Between that & a new third party controller it's been working perfect. Now I just need to get stuff to solder & learn to solder to fix the og controller stick that's broke. But for now imma just swap whatever buttons I can & she'll onto one of the 2 3rd party controllers boards. So I can use an "OG" PS2 controller.

Ah yeah, that one is more easy to replace, thankfully! Good to know that you can swap some parts over. Desoldering the stick is quite difficult. But as long as you can swap parts over, it's fine I guess!

Hi!

Some do “move” when it’s in the browser menu and some stays like it is (looks frozen). But you can still use your controller to get in all the options, at least, this should be the case. Just try/test a new controller and see how it goes! It’s the most easy way to test and to be sure.

Please let us know how it goes!
