Doesn't charge battery, yet it implies it is

@danj

Hi Dan, not sure if you will see this post, just joined the 'ifixit' hub. I have a problem with Macbook Pro A1502 model - late 2013 - battery needed replacing and was left unattended and uncharged for previous 3 months - connected to magsafe charger yesteray and although the machine stated to charge it then subsequently will not take any charge - i have tried disconnecting and reconnecting, resetting SMC etc all to no avail, the charger light goes green when connected to macbook, no orange light ... and a strange ckicking noise is coming from keyboard area when i press and hold start button - any advice ?? i am a bit lost... many thanks Giles

@giles94589 - Let's see if we can get a bit more diagnosis of the problem, install this gem of an App CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the Apps main window and post it here so we can see what's happening.

@danj - Hi Dan, Thanks for getting back to me ! re installing 'CoconutBattery' not quite sure what you mean .. as macbook totally dead and can't install anything ..?? the only thing that shows anything is the green light on macsafe charger connection ...that should be orange if it was working... otherwise no other sign of life, screen completely dead and a clicking noise when i press the power button....

@giles94589 - FYI - You don't need to make multiple postings for the same problem. If you have a second system with a different issue that makes sense to post it independently. We try to keep the systems unique so others can find things.

@giles94589 - Well that takes the Cake!

So... that means you need to try a new battery as SMC is locked up. Using it to restart the system and then reconnect your battery after doing a clean shutdown. A good Mac tech can also apply power to the logic board power rail as well instead. Even still that assumes there is nothing else wrong.

Given the age of the system it likely needs a new battery anyways MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2014) Battery and here's the guide MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Late 2013 Battery Replacement
