Released in May 2020, the 13" MacBook Pro features quad-core Intel 10th generation Core i5 and i7 processors, and Intel Iris Plus integrated graphics. (Model A2251/EMC3348 with four Thunderbolt 3 ports)

Why don't these two thunderbolt ports work?

  1. replaced the touchpad/trackpad with an ifixit one i didn't like it so I swapped it back out again
  2. laptop worked
  3. battery life sucked so I bought a replacement battery and swapped that out and shorted something because
  4. macbook doesn't boot, no sound, nothing
  5. got diagnosed as LB failure so I replaced that
  6. macbook works great EXCEPT for two of the thunderbolts on the left hand side which is fine except it's annoying

i'm just curious what went wrong. i took a close look and inspected the connections for the ports and it looks fine; there isn't any noticeable damage and everything is connected.

the laptop doesn't even "see" the other two ports per the system report.

i'm including photos with more details.

Hi @dufflebag149,

Looks like the computer does see the other two thunderbolt ports as there are two buses showing up (each side of the laptop has one thunderbolt "bus").

Just double checking, the laptop doesn't charge via the left two TB ports or is it just data that doesn't work? seems like those two TB ports may have issues within them so you might have to replace them (sounds like this macbook has been troublesome & it might only get worse, let's hope not).

Hope this is helpful :).

No charge (i tried two different adapters an hp brand AND an apple brand and two dofferent off brand cables) no data (i used a hootoo usb c hub to connect an extra display) nothing... Is there anything else I could try?

Ah yeah you're right I learned after i posted this that its two ports per bus.

It's running great otherwise and I see no sense in giving up on it just because of its past and the previous user was pretty reckless with it (wife). I will keep that in mind though.

Do you have any apps or tips on what to keep an eye out for as time goes on?

btw i just checked data and that doesn't work either. thanks for the help though :)

Was there any spillage in the area? Like signs of something sticky under the lid area. While a pain I would take the port assembly out to see if the socket pines are dirty or damaged and as you disconnect the cable inspect the logic board connector and the ribbon cable for damage. I have seen knifes and other tools damage things if the are used too deeply. Lastly here's the needed part: MacBook Pro (A1989, A1990, A2141, A2159, A2251, A2289, A2338 Mid 2018-2022) USB-C Board as the fist thing I would try.

If that failed then you likely have a logic board issue look for damage along the edge besides the ports connector for tool damage if you suspect it or still something deeper you may need to find someone with deeper skills and the needed tools to fix the logic board. Warning! Apple only replaces the logic boards and they tend to wipe your data so make a backup before tempt fate.

no spillage afaik but maybe my wife had spilled something near it a few years ago but i don't know.

yes a pain; atp i do not mind using it as is considering everything else. its just too risky and i need this laptop for work. will there be any problem using only the two ports on the right hand side? am i risking overloading anything? overheating something?

this laptop is apparently very sensitive...

@dufflebag149 - Hard to say... assuming you didn't have a liquid spill I can't see any issues using it in this state. Still it's a pain having useless ports.
