Repair guides and documentation for the Google Pixel 6a with 5G smartphone. Released in July 2022.

What's the distinction between GB17L and other models?

I've got a refurbished 6a GB17L (the Japan model), which is part of the batch of bad batteries. It seems like nobody is willing to claim that the GB17L has a battery that's replaceable. Google wouldn't do the repair themselves, and the battery kit from iFixit is not compatible with the GB17L.

What's the distinction? Does anybody know if there is a different battery model used in this phone?

Hi @benharris25453

If you haven't already done so, open the phone and check what the model number of the battery is in the phone. Try searching online for the model number of the battery in your phone to find suppliers that have it.

Looking at the image in Step.36 of the ifixit Google Pixel 6a Battery Replacement guide the battery model number is GLU7G (see image below)

Searching online for the battery model number gives results for a Google Pixel 6a but not the phone model version that it can be used in.

This website gives the specifications for the 4 versions of the phone. The battery specifications are the same for all 4 versions

Battery type: LiPo: li-ion polymer (Non removable)

Battery capacity: 4410 mAh

Charger, watts: 18W Wired fast charging, Reverse charging by cable, USB Power Delivery 3.0

Inductive / wireless charging: Not supported

Hi jayeff,

Thanks for taking the time. I ought to have included it in my question, but yes that information is what I managed to find out in searching. Following your suggestion, I disassembled enough to get a peak at the battery, it is indeed GLU7G.

So for anybody else who owns an affected GB17L, the battery should be fine.

I'm going to purchase a battery to fit, and if anything goes amiss (relevant to the part itself), I'll try update the question with more information.

Hi Ben,

I'm having the same phone model. I don't have the guts to open up my phone to view the internals and I live in a country where the Google Pixel does not have official stores for support.

I'd love to hear if the battery from ifixit works for you, so that I can purchase it and pass the phone to a third party store to repair as I don't want them using aftermarket parts (if there are any).

Thanks!
