The Nikon D80 is a digital, 10.2 megapixel, single-lens camera that was released to the public in 2005. It is meant for digital photo-taking and filming.

Flash assembly doesn't stay down

This is on a D80. The latch to hold the flash assembly to the body is either worn or not engaging. See red arrow in first picture. It won't stay down. Is there a way to replace or adjust this small part. Spring in the body maybe?

I've removed the flash cover so I can manually drop the flash assembly (2nd picture). The latch engages about half the time. It seems to rest on a cylinder (3rd picture) Is that meant to move or could have gotten loose and shifted up?

I use a Z6 mostly. I'm just trying to get an old D80 body working for my 15 yr old to learn on. And use my old lens.

Are you talking about the hot shoe for an external flash or the built in flash? If an external flash are you able to attach it to your Z6 hot shoe? If not it's likely the flash foot and if you can provide a picture, we may be able to better provide an answer.

It's an old D80 I'm trying to get working to use with my old lenses. And a camera for my 15yr old to learn on.

If I can just get the screws loose, I think it's just a spring in the part containing the pop up flash (advice from another post). I'm hoping the spring can just be reattached or replaced

OK, so it sounds like it's the built in pop up flash is not working. So with a fully charged battery, when you press the button to pop the flash up, nothing happens?

FYI, in the past someone had this issue and this post shows the suggestions they got. It may help you. My Nikon D90 flash doesnt work

@rickwag The flash works fine. The latch holding the assembly down doesn't.

I've edited my initial post adding photos

@scotthermann My D60 looks like the catch is identical. When that catch is to the back, it should catch the flash when pushed down. In your last picture it looks like you removed the top and from what I see, the catch is holding, is that correct now? I took the top of the flash off my D60 and it looks the same, the top spring is the one that pops it up. The spring holding the plastic disc looks identical in mine. When I close the lid, the latch in your first picture gets pushed forward and then springs back to lock in place. The lower spring does not appear to move. I tried to upload images but they didn't show up.
