Clara HD frozen and can't be restarted

This is my second Clara HD 'dying' in the same way.

The screen is frozen to the last page I read. When I plug the device the charging light doesn't turn on. When I press the start button for several seconds (up to 30)nothing happens. I tried to let the battery run out but the first one has been showing the same page for over a year and the screen still isn't black
