Try booting in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key. What system are you running. Start up from the installation disk by putting the disk in the CD drive and holding down the "C" key while hitting the start button the run Disk Utilities and see if you can repair the system.

Too fast for me--like the idea of booting into the safe mode. Ralph

If possible boot with your OS disk and run disk repair until it finds no problems. With luck that will clear the problem. You should do a backup of your data first because you may end up needing to format and reinstall. Backup first and then repair. Good luck. Ralph
