Help! My mac 'Pops' off at switch on!

My white un-web cam iMac takes four attempts to start up, making a 'pop' noise when failing, but then works well although can 'pop off' when woken from a long sleep.

Is it a bad power unit?

Please help!

Yes, My first guess would be the power supply. Lay it down flat on its screen.. remove the back.. usually if a power supply is "popping" it will have a distinct smell.. also looks for any buldging or swollen capacitors.

I'm pretty sure it's the power supply because the original power supply that comes with this model is notorious for failure after long use.

Could be, but could also be a bad hard drive, use disk utility to verify your hard disk if that's failing, a failing drive can make popping noises.
