Why isn't my cassette tape not turning when I try to record?

I can rewind and fast-forward my cassette tape, but the tape doesn't advance when I try to record.

@pmmm just to clarify. you can rewind and fast forward but you can't play the tape at all. Not in recording and not in regular playback? Your cassette recorder is a M-430?
