What you have to do is update your BIOS. I threw this problem into the Google machine on a whim and I found this solution that actually works. Go to support.acer.com and then put in the serial number of your laptop. Make sure you select the correct OS! (I'm stubbornly running Windows 10) and then go down to BIOS/Firmware. You then want to look for the update by the name of "1. Add panel LP156WFC-SPD5 support. 2. Add newPanasonic battery. " and download it. Wherever you downloaded it to, double click on it to extract it, and when you've extracted it, double click on it again. My Nitro 5 was on 1.01 and this BIOS update is 1.25. I then ran it, gave it about a minute and it did it's thing, shut off the laptop. Then the keyboard backlight was flashing on and off for a minute or so, and the laptop came back to life. I logged in like normal, checked the battery status and it showed the battery was charging. Bingo!
