It may be a problem with the earpiece speaker or the main phone speaker. I agree with what @jayeff said in his comment for this question too so try to see if that works.

Can you hear OK when on a call using the phone in loudspeaker mode (aka hands free mode) or by using headphones with a microphone attachment plugged into the phone's headphone socket?
