How can I get this ribbon cable to connect?

I was swapping top cases on my MacBook pro when I damaged part of the keyboard connector trying to take the ribbon cable out. I tried to put the keyboard ribbon cable back into the connector in my new top case. But it just wouldn't fit. I could start to see the layers on the ribbon cable spread apart, making it harder to put back in. At that point, I stopped, not trying to make it worse.

Is there any way at this point that I can put the ribbon cable back in so that all the keys work? Or am I better off just going to a repair shop and see if they can repair it. Is it even repairable at all?

on photo 2 the bottom of the connector is a plastic tab, lift it up, put the ribbon in and close

I thought that too, that's why the connector is slightly broken. I tried to lift it up but the plastic is so brittle that it just breaks off. By the way, all the other connectors just slide in, no tabs or anything.

@Tom Dilli your lifting the wrong side thats why its breaking

@Tom Dilli - It looks broken to me! Time to replace at least the latch piece if you can. Here's the needed part Keyboard Connector (30-pin)

But if you need to replace the full connector its not easy! You'll need a good soldering iron or a hot air station. Its very easy to damage the logic board lifting the copper pads.

@tech_ni this is another follow-up to that other follow-up. I just wanted to thank you so much for your great instructions, If not for you I would have just taken it to the apple store and gotten a really expensive repair. You are a life saver!!!
