Upgrading existing NVMe flash and installing additional SSD 2.5 inch

Hi Y’all,

I have an iMac 27” late 2015 (model 17,1). The iMac was bought with the Quad-Core Intel Core i7 4GHz and SSD SM0256G PCI installed (251 GB).

I want to upgrade the 251 GB storage and whas wondering how to do this. Most information online regards replacing the old Fusion Drive with a PCI. But my system allready has a PCI installed.

So, my question: is it possible to add an extra SSD but leaving the 251 GB PCI where it is? Because my system wasn’t shipped what a fusion drive in the first place, do i need to buy certain parts the add an SSD? Wich SSD is best and compatible.

Yes. it is certainly possible, although it will likely be quite a bit of work. You’ll need a cable to add the ability to connect an 2.5” SATA SSD to the logic board since it will not have shipped with one. This plugs into the back of the logic board, I don’t recall whether or not it will also have the brackets, to mount it, since I have never personally done this upgrade. You’ll also need a temp sensor adapter cable since i believe these had a special temp sensor plug that comes out of the OEM drive that goes to the board. But I know iFixit sells a kit which includes basically everything you need, save the cable since most people doing this will likely already have an HDD as part of a fusion drive.
