New battery not charging. Showing "service recommended".

Hi guys,

So, I replaced the battery on my A1398 Mid-2015 Retina MacBook Pro and now I can’t turn on the laptop on battery. Also, while it does turn on with the power adapter, it doesn’t charge the battery, and if I remove the power adapter, the computer shuts down.

Any ideas?

I remember having a similar issue when replacing the battery on an A1502, but I can’t remember how I solved it lol…

Things I’ve already tried (with no success unfortunately):

  1. different charger
  2. SMC and PRAM reset
  3. Safe Mode

I feel like it’s probably something I’m missing. Something small. But I’m just not sure what else to try. I kinda doubt the battery is damaged in some way, it’s a new battery after all…but also, I have no other idea right now.

What would you recommend?

Also, from System Report.

For what I can tell, the system does see the battery… It just doesn’t wanna charge it, for some reason.

Update (01/06/2022)

I managed to take some pictures of the board. I’m definitely not a specialist, but it doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with the board. Also, I’ve tried the old battery again, and…works like a charm. So I don’t think it’s the board. But I can’t figure out what am I missing, if it’s on the battery side (as it seems to be).

Also, forgot to answer your previous question, but I took some pictures of that too, the connector itself seems ok (for as far as I can tell)…so does the one on the board.

You can see all the pictures below. :)

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Update (01/05/2022)

Aaalright folks.

So the new battery came in today (yeah, it took a lot longer than anticipated) and…yeah, it’s powering the computer up (without the charger plugged in) and charging just fine. So yes, it was the battery indeed.

A few interesting things:

in Catalina, the battery automatically showed up with Condition: Normal. In Monterey (probably Big Sur, as well), it showed as “Service Recommended“

in Monterey, to make the battery show up correctly (Condition: Normal), I had to do a NVRAM/PRAM reset using Alt/Option + Command + P + R + Power Button (from a shutdown state). I thought doing an SMC reset would actually do this trick but nope, resetting SMC didn’t help. Resetting NVRAM/PRAM did. Just though it might be interesting to mention.

Thank you very much @flannelist for your feedback!

I agree. It does look like the system is detecting information from the battery and that the battery itself “should” be in good health. But that information comes in on different lines than the battery would charge/discharge through.

If you have not already, I would reseat the battery connector and inspect all of the pins just to make sure there’s nothing in the conector, on either the battery side or theboard side. But realistically this sounds more like something on the board which regulates charge function is not working properly. Many of them are located to the right of the trackpad connector. Some pictures may be helpful if this is the case, just to be sure nothing got nudged accidentally or damaged during the replacement process. I know it’s quite an ordeal, particularly if you took the logic board out.

Many thanks for the reply!

I'll take some pictures tomorrow morning.

I didn't take out the logic board, since I didn't find the need for it. I hope I didn't nudge any of the components on the board. But I guess we'll see. I'm planning on trying the old battery, just to see if the issue still occurs. If it does, then it is probably something on the board. If it doesn't, I'm guessing it's probably back on the battery side, or...something else. I guess we'll see.

Once again, thank you very much for your answer!

Hi Alisha!

Apparently I can't attach media to these comments. I hope I didn't spam everyone with my failed attempts, cause that was definitely not my intention. Anyway, pictures and reply should be somewhere (probably up) on this page.

@arsradu

The "answer (+ images)" was moved to your question as an update, so as to not confuse anyone else looking at this thread that they were an answer to the problem.

People usually scroll down through the "Answers" to find solutions ;-)

As you stated, you cannot post images in a comment, only in a question or an answer.

Thanks, @jayeff!

I was wondering were did they go :))

As I said, my intention was not to spam. Just wanted to have the comment with the pictures as a reply to Alisha's. Thank you very much for clarifying that this is not currently possible. Hopefully, it will be implemented in the future. But until then, thank you very much for the help. Much appreciated. :)

@arsradu

No problems.

if you want to add images or add to your question, click on Options > Edit in your question.

You've already worked out how to signal the person you're dealing with by adding their ID link e.g. @jayeff in your comment or updated question etc.

This only works if they have one of course. Check under their avatar to see if it is there or not. If not you will have to wait to see if they check. If it is there they will get a notification.

Cheers
