Apple's mainstream 2021 iPhone was released on September 24th and comes with a 6.1" OLED display, a dual 12 MP camera system, and in five available colors. Successor to the iPhone 12.

Can I replace the camera module with the iPhone 13 Pro camera module?

I want to do 3D photography, mainly for preservation and archival of actual places so future generations can view them. But I got this. The second-worst phone of 2021 (mini is worse) because it runs iOS, and because it doesn’t allow LiDAR. For me, iPhone 13 Pro is just a 3D scanner. And iOS is just a dumb firmware. So this phone is literally a 3D scanner without the 3D scanner. Can I replace the camera module with the pro one?

why you would do that

Sadly, no. The 13 Pro has 3 camera lenses and the 13 only has 2, so no way to fit it into the housing without modification. Additionally the camera assembly from the 13 uses 1 cable (and connection to the board) and the 13 Pro uses 2. I suppose there may be a way to modify it to work, but it would require a lot of knowledge. So I would say it’s maybe possible, but realistically, it’s not practical.

Cameras are also paired to the logic board starting with the 12 series and if I recall correctly swapping camera modules even within the same model caused the cameras to not work properly or at all.

But does the LiDAR sensor work

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

The LiDAR sensor is actually a separate module altogether and is not physically integrated into the camera at all. It even has its own connector to the board. It likely also has dedicated components on the logic board which would be absent on the vanilla 13 Pro. So. No. Not in any practical way.

No, you don’t. Don’t expect iPhone to be moddable.
