Released in May 2020, the 13" MacBook Pro features quad-core Intel 8th generation Core i5 and i7 processors, and Intel Iris Plus 645 integrated graphics. (Model A2289/EMC3456 with two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

Ran OS update from Catalina. MacBook will not boot up at all.

MacBook completely bricked from a OS update. No power. No signs of life.

  1. I was prompted to run a company OS update (formerly on Catalina). Not sure if it tried to update to Big Sur or Monterey.
  2. On the first restart, it indicated that I needed to boot up from startup disk.
  3. Boots up, but asks for another restart for installation to complete.
  4. I initiate 2nd restart, the MacBook never comes back on.

Solutions I’ve tried:

  • Holding power button for 10 seconds
  • Resetting the SMC
  • Resetting the NVRAM/PRAM
  • Charging with different MacBook chargers

@danj - After combing this site and reading your expert responses, I am so curious if you have a thought.

Sorry not enough here to base an opinion, When you restart your system does it respond at all? Hear the bong and/or fan, get any alteration in the screen (backlight light, screens grey color change).

The fact it was looking for the startup disk implies the update might have been infected with malware! Are you sure this dictum from your company vs someone posing as them and where was the update originating from Apples servers or the companies.

Why did they say you had to upgrade? Apple rolls out security updates for at least four versions back. As a frame of reference I'm running Mojave and still getting updates for it.

Is this your own system or a company supplied system? If its your own I think you'll need to visit an Apple Store to get your system fixed if its a suppled system time to drop it off at your IT dept. and let them deal with it (hopefully they give you a replacement system).

Hi Dan!

No response at all. No fan, lights, anything. This was rolled out by my company and it's a rather large problem, though it did not affect everyone that updated.

It's a company supplied system, but our IT support is currently stumped. The issue is widespread enough that they have halted all replacements. I am working off of a virtual workspace at the moment, but it's terribly slow.

I believe it's an honest issue (not malware) as it was initiated by our company. Appears that it may have affected the firmware in such a way that there's no signal from power button to internal workings. Is there any bringing it back from the dead if we open it up?

@deei - Ouch! Sadly there is nothing you can do at the hardware level given the fact more than one system encountered the problem. One needs to focus in on the firmware image which was downloaded.

Unlike the older 2015 and older retina systems which had a simple power switch all of the 2016 and newer MacBook Pro's have TouchID which changes things quite dramatically from a startup perspective.

At this point your IT staff needs to leverage their Apple contacts to do a forensics review of the update to see what went wrong with their update.

I'm suspecting the systems damaged will need new logic boards as Apple won't repair them at the depot level.

An advanced independent repair person might be able to fix the hardware but without knowing exactly what firmware element was affected it would be difficult and it still may not be possible.

Sadly, I think you're right. Appreciate you reviewing my case, @danj. I guess it's time to figure out how to procure a new device. Thank you!
