After Screen replacement shuts off when lid is closed

After replacing the screen on my 2017 MacBook Pro it only lets me turn the computer on by resetting it’s SMC. Also when ever I close the lid it turns the computer off and won’t let me turn it back on until I reset the SMC. Occasionally when I open the lid everything is on except the screen and it only works if I reset the SMC. I have ran diagnostics and said everything is good. I tried to reset the PRAM and still have this issue. I also tried booting into Saftey mode and tried closing the lid and no luck. Lastly I tried internet recovery and check the first aid on the drive and everything was good. Any ideas of what I could do or what the issue could be?

Why did you need to replace the display? That might offer us a clue on where to look.

Did you try running the onboard diagnostics? Restart your system and press the D key. Let us know what you get for an error.

I replaced the display because a friend tripped over the cord when charging and broke the original display. I did run that and it said everything was good no issues.

Your system uses a magnet to activate a Hall sensor when the lid is opened & closed.

So I’m suspecting you had additional damage beyond the display.

Update (10/21/2021)

Using a small rare earth magnet and a steel paper clip you should be able to locate the hall sensor sliding it across the keyboard case top along the edge just in front of the ports. Using a thin strip of masking tape make note of that location and folding down the display so you can transfer that location to the lid. With that mark on the lid you should be able to pass the steel paper clip across and feel the tug of the magnet just behind the bezel plate. Is the location aligned or is it off.

In addition to the location check to see if the magnet passing across the marked spot on the top side of the case turns on and off the display. If it doesn’t then the logic board will need service.
