Help! MacBook dropped, worked for 3days, now display is blank / black

Around 4 days back, my MacBook Pro (a1502) dropped from a chair (2-feet high). Since then, it has been working properly, no issues. Yesterday, I was working on it and suddenly the display went blank / black.

  1. The computer is still working (startup chime, keyboard lights up etc.)
  2. Connected the laptop to an external monitor - the computer is full usable with an external monitor
  3. Tried some of the tests people have suggested: Held the apple logo against bright light - the display is Black (I don’t see any light).
  4. I did try Cmd R, PRAM and NVRAM setups - no luck
  5. I opened the back cover, and there is a cable that can be disconnected. I followed this How to Fix Dropped Macbook Pro Black Screen - no luck

Is there anything else I can try to make sure that it is not some loose connection.

Sometimes the cure someone offers is not the best ;-{

Following Kev’s video could make things worse!

While he’s on the right path of reseating the display connector he didn’t first disconnect the battery (power) which could have caused issues! Then he got distracted playing with the AirPort board before getting to the display connection. Unplugging either of these with power running could damage things!

If you review all of the guides published here its the very first thing we focus on MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2015 Display Assembly Replacement Just doing the first six steps and then jumping to Step 11, is what I would have done.

Sadly, it does sound like your display got the worse of it. Let’s do a bit more testing, aim a flashlight though the lids Apple Logo do you see the faint image of your desktop and its icons? If you do then the backlight logic needs repairs, other wise the LCD panel is broken and you’ll need to replace the display assembly. This series is still highly sought! Here’s one source for the needed part 13” MacBook Pro Display Assembly Here you can see there are a few options for the part new to used from Grade-A to Grade-C each at different costs.

I did try the flashlight test - can’t see anything on the display. So I am guessing it is broken. Wondering if I should buy a display assembly or just purchase a used a1502 for a bit more.

@vivpr - No easy answer here, How worn is your system, does it have a few dents? Is it a now end model 2.7 GHz i5 or a better 2.9 GHz i5 or the top 3.1 GHz i7?

Maybe finding better i5 or i7 at a good price might be worth it. As long as the display is working you could move the display and the logic board over to your case as well.

So the tech who I am talking to has mentioned two things: 1. the display of course needs fixing, but in addition 2. He says that a power supply to the display needs fixing (IC replacement). He said there are two display circuits - so even with the external display being ok (HDMI port), the power to the display is not. So the cost is Display +$100 or so. Does that make sense ?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@vivpr - Yes it does.

The connector carries both the video signal and the backlight power. The test we did with the flashlight was a poor mans backlight. If you had seen the faint image then it would have been just the backlight that needed to be looked at. But you stated you couldn't see the faint image so the video side is bad as well pointing to the display needing replacement. I would start there and hope that was it.

One of the bad things in Kev’s vid was not disconnecting the power so your efforts to reset the cable could have blown the fuse or worse damaged the connector pins (shorting).

So the tech could be right you have a double whammy! One you might have created. A fuse is not a big deal but anything more could be costly.
