Display Not Functioning But Device Is Booting

I have a macbook pro A1278, mid 2012. The screen is not functioning but it works on an external monitor. Can just the display cable be replaced or does the whole screen have to be replaced? Thanks for any help!

Let’s make sure of things!

Shine a flashlight through the Apple Logo in the lid, are you able to see the faint images of your desktop icon?

I’m not sure what you mean by "the lid", top of the laptop that closes onto the keyboard?

When I boot it, some greenish and reddish lines appear from the top of the screen down, but no other information will display on the keyboard.

@jarrod millar - Sadly the display has failed. Time to replace MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Display Assembly and here is the guide to put it in MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Display Replacement

Your update was enough to tell us what is bad.

@danj thanks I appreciate it, that way i know how to fix it straightaway instead of monkey around with other tasks.
