Problems replacing the battery, the cable doesn't fit

I tried replacing the A1309 battery in my early 2009 Macbook Pro 17" but the ribbon connector on the new one doesn't seem to fit tightly enough in the internal socket with the result that I don't get the Amber charging light on the magsafe adapter.

I tried another A1309 battery but had the same problem.

Can anyone please help ?

@danj Hi Dan, thanks for your reply and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I have attached a photo showing the horizontal battery connector. The yellow arrows are just to indicate that when I try to insert it, it doesn't 'click in' and stay put. (I make sure to put it in evenly, not literally as shown in the pic). It's an OEM battery bought from Apple which has exactly the same plug to the one it's replacing). The plug on the old battery also won't now stay seated so I'm at a bit of a loss. Regards, Stuart.

Update: I found what the problem was, which was that some of the pins were bent. I managed to get most of them straightened again, but unfortunately the one 2nd from left broke off. Will that affect the battery performance or is it safe to reconnect ? Any advice gratefully appreciated.
