Samsung's 5th-generation Android-based Galaxy smartphone was released April 11, 2014. Improvements to the phone include a fingerprint scanner, updated camera, larger display, and water resistance. It is available in four different colors; black, blue, white, and copper.

phone screen black on startup, but after powering on/off it shows

Im not sure about the real cause of this either its when i dropped my phone or something else but when i turn on the phone it stays black. I would have to turn it off and on rapidly or take out the battery to restart it for the scren to show. Im not sure if the pixels are dying also at times my phone would flicker and the color of the screen would look weird when its at low percentages. Any ideas as whats causing and how i can fix it?

Hi,

Does it do this with the charger connected and switched on?

When charger is connected and i switch on my phone it still gives the same problem.

Honestly, i didnt take this into consideration but it was actually the charger that was causing the problem as i was using a different brand charger rather than my regular Samsung charger (just the power adapter though, you can use any usb you want).

My phone is now turning on properly and not glitching out when its at low charge.

Hi @Macaroni Jam

When the phone is turned on and the screen is black, try shining a torch at an angle close to the screen and check if you can see images at all.

They will be very faint if they are there at all so trying this in a darkened room may help.

If you can see images then there is a backlight problem. Either a loose display cable, a faulty LCD display or perhaps a problem on the systemboard with the backlight power supply.

Here’s the ifixit Samsung Galaxy S5 Display Assembly Replacement guide.

This will help you to open the phone and check if the display cable connection to the systemboard is secure or not.

If it is OK then as a DIY repair all you can do is to temporarily replace the display assembly and check if it now works OK.

ifixit has replacement Galaxy S5 Screen available or search online for Galaxy S5 LCD display assembly to get suppliers that suit you best.

I had this happen to a s5 of mine and it would recognize touch and would ring, no screen unless it was jarred a certain way……most likely a bad connection and may be economical to fix……also could be a battery issue….put it on charge. Then after a while throw it in a few tightly closed ziplocks and put it in the freezer……let it chill a lil bit and see if the screen work,
