Element Roku TV has backlight and sounds but no picture.

I have a 65” Element Roku Tv E4SW6518RKU, that went black screen on us the other day and we have had no luck repairing it. The screen is black, but the backlights and audio are working fine. I have done the flashlight test and the backlights are fine. I have already replaced the Tcon board and the main board with replacements from eBay but have no idea how to test them to see if the new boards are even functional as they have not solved the problem. I have a multimeter and a kit to solder with if need be, but have no experience at all with the multimeter. I have tried the Roku device “remote reset” where you press a combination of buttons to restart the tv. I have unplugged and held the power button, Pressed the reset button on the tv etc. I am at the end of the line with what I can think of to do. If  anyone could give and tips or advice on what to do next I would really appreciate it. It would be great to save this tv! Just a note: I know the top ribbon cable on the tcon board looks like it is not seated properly but it is definitely in there, I think the black line on the cable is just printed incorrectly. Thanks in advance!!

Hi ,

Just verifying that you've tried different input types i.e. coax, HDMI, AV, different input cables and signal sources e.g. dvd player to check if there are images on the screen as you didn't say?

Also can you view the TV menu screens OK?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

I have tried all of the things you listed. We cannot see the menus or anything at all on the screen. It is completely black save for the light from the back lights. When we push buttons on the remote though you hear sound as if you are clicking through the menu. Thanks!

Hi @zjones16

The lower cable connection from the tab board to the screen as seen in your image looks strange as compared to the top one. (board between the tcon board and the screen). Is this the connection you referred to?

It's like something has moved and is no longer applying pressure to the cable connection of the tab board but maybe it’s just the angle I’m seeing it at. Be careful if you touch it as the screen connections are quite fragile. Be gentle

Other than that, as the backlights are working as is the audio and also that the mainboard appears to be responding to the remote controls and the other controls perhaps try replacing the tcon board and check. Try sourcing a replacement board from a supplier that has a no questions asked returns policy in case it isn’t the problem

I didn’t notice that little bit. The connection that I was talking about was the ribbon cable coming into the top of the tcon board. I will check this area later today and report back. I have already replaced the tcon board but as I stated in my original post I have no idea how to test the board to see if it is in working condition. Thanks for the help!

@zjones16

Sorry about that, I missed the bit about already replacing the tcon. ;-(

Can't find a schematic for the tcon board but noticed near the cable connector for the cable from the mainboard (CN101?) that there is a component designated F301 (I think - my eyes aren't that good and I can't zoom in far enough to make sure).

F = Fuse so check that there is voltage there. I don't know what the value would be so start at the highest DC voltage range on a DMM and then scale down.

The voltage will becoming from the mainboard as there is no separate feed from the power board to the tcon. Measure between the fuse and an earth point on the chassis i.e. board screws. measure both sides of the fuse just to be sure.

Be careful when testing. Don't slip with the meter test probes and short something out. Also there is exposed lethal voltage on the power board so be careful when working in the back of a TV with the power connected.

If there is voltage and since you have replaced both the mainboard and the tcon and assuming that both replacements are OK that only leaves the the cables between the boards i.e. mainboard - tcon - tab boards - LCD panel or the LCD panel
