Guides for the Wi-Fi version of the iPad Mini 3 (A1599). Announced on October 16, 2014, the iPad Mini 3 is the successor to the iPad Mini Retina (now known as the iPad mini 2).

iPad Mini 3 doesn't turn on

Hello ! The Ipad Mini 3 suddenly stopped turning on at all. I checked the battery’s voltage and it’s ok.

I tried to plug the iPad on my Macbook, it doesn’t detect it.

Can anyone help me?

Thank you

Hello @danj et @arbaman, last time you helped me a lot with my MacBook issue (and I’m still writing from it, again thank you).

I was wondering if you had any idea on the following matter ?

@anaisrqr - I'm a machead ;-} While I own an iPad & iPhone I don't fix them any more.

Lets see if @arbaman has an answer

Hehe thank you for your reply :)

When troubleshooting charging issues, I would do the following (in order):

  1. Always try another Lightning cable and charger, preferably Apple original or MFi certified units.
  2. The Lightning cable 8-pin connector should be sitting flush with the housing and completely inserted. If it is not, there could be lint/dust/debris inside the port impeding a proper connection. You can clean it out with a toothpick, fine point tweezers or a dental pick. Just be careful not to damage the pins inside the Lightning Port.
  3. Change the battery. The battery is the weakest link in the entire device and certainly for charger related issues - especially on older devices that still have the original battery. Please let us know what voltage you measured at the battery. The iPad requires pretty high voltage to boot properly.
  4. If the battery is in good condition, you can use a USB Ammeter to determine if the device is really drawing current when it connected to a charger. If it isn't drawing current, then I would change the Lightning/Charge Port.
  5. If a new battery and charge port still don't resolve the issue, then you either have faulty replacement parts (possible) or a logic board issue. There is an IC (commonly referred to as Tristar) responsible for communicating with the charging device and uncertified chargers can damage it. Unplug the battery and connect a known-good (preferably Apple original or MFi) charger to the device. A properly working device will show an Apple logo and boot loop. If the Tristar IC is bad then the device will not do anything.

Thank you @refectio. The voltage was 3,8. Is it enough ? i will buy a usb ammeter as you suggest. I will let you know ;)

Let the battery charge for several hours and then measure it again. For now we'll assume that the charge circuit works properly - the USB Ammeter will confirm that definitively.

If it's still at the same voltage, it's probably a bad battery (or the charge circuit - see above).

At 3.8V, it should boot but it is somewhat borderline. Besides, the voltage is only half of the puzzle, the battery's capacity to deliver current is the real issue. The boot process requires a lot of current, like starting a car, compared to just normal operation. When current demand goes up, a weak battery drops the voltage and that mix can make the difference between an apparently good battery and a poor one even though you can measure a fairly high voltage without a load.
