Ethernet doesn't work when I plug it directly into the modem.

I get no internet when I plug the cord directly into my modem, only when I plug it into my router. What could be the cause of this? I need to be able to use the modem to plug directly into, but right now I can’t, it just acts like there is no signal. Thanks for the help!

Hi ,

What is the make and model number of the modem?

Have you checked the settings in the modem?

@jayeff CM100V. Not specifically, but this used to be an issue with the old modem as well, I think it has to do more with the router than the modem.

@Garrison Bates ,

Did you mean CM1000?

If so can you access the modem's UI by going to http://192.168.100.1 in the URL of your computer browser?

User name = admin, password = password unless you changed it of course.

Sorry, it was actually the netgear CM1100V

Could it be a bad cord & your wireless is working from the router as it usually would?

@Garrison Bates

Are there any LAN LEDs showing on the modem when you plug the PC into the LAN 1 port on the modem?

Is the router still plugged into the LAN 1 port on the modem and are you plugging the PC into the LAN 2 port?

If so this won't work as there is only one effective port, i.e. LAN1, out of the modem, unless you use "Ethernet port aggregation" and this is where you connect both LAN ports i.e. LAN 1 & LAN 2 to either the PC or the router. The caveat is that they must support this feature as well.

Here’s the user manual that may help.
