My laptop boots to a blank screen with a folder and a question mark

I have had this laptop since Christmas when my cousin gave me her old laptop.

I do not have access to this laptop for a week since it is at my other home but I want to figure out the issue. After looking online it looks like 2 things …

  • The logic board isn’t working correctly which would be very expensive to fix at Apple
  • I think, I could go into recovery mode.

I need some help to figure out the best thing for me to do?

Did you try accessing your WiFi AP so you can access internet recovery? At this point that's the next step as you'll need to try to re-install the OS. If that failed your logic board has a problem with the flash drive.

I am not sure what WiFi AP is but I will look it up, I'm pretty sure that the logic board has a problem with the flash drive, but how should I proceed with this?

the disk utility doesn't see it, should I open her up and see if it looks busted?

Here's a good guide which explains what the different boot screens look like and there cause If your Mac doesn't start up all the way

Booting up with a question mark tells us the drive is missing its OS files or is looking for a different drive for them. Let’s see if you can still boot up using the Option key when you restart your system. That will get you to the Startup Manager do you see your drive listed? If you do use the arrow keys to select it, does your system boot up properly?

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

If not we’ll need to go into recovery mode using the Command (⌘) and R keys.
