Why is the Finder Opening and then "Unexpectedly Quits"?

This is a 17’ MacBook Pro (A1229) that has not been used for a log time. I bought a new battery and it starts right up. Right after completing booting up I get a message screen that my finder has unexpectedly quit. I click on Relaunch and it does the same thing.

first try, repair permission on utility disk and then reboot
